Psalm 23:1-6

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing…”
What powerful words. In today’s world we are all convinced that we need more, and yet we really don’t. God provides everything we need. He says it right there, we lack nothing. Lord help me to remember that You provide all of my needs, every minute, every hour, every day.

So often I connect this Psalm with death yet dark valleys are everywhere. Thank you Jesus for your refreshment to my soul that comes when I need it most!!! And I praise you for the mountaintops that come after the dark valleys!

I had been trying to find the right thing to give courage to a friend who is new in his walk with Christ, this verse is what I needed, but not just me, both of us needed it this week. It is verse 6 that caught my eye. I pray that this will help him. Thank you My Bridge for these verses.

The Lord is my shepherd, protector, guardian, caretaker, investor, supplier, leader. He can be trusted to lead me into places that I can be fed and nourished and while I may not be able to anticipate the dangers and the pitfalls that I may encounter he is at the ready to help me avoid the things that would keep me from experiencing the fullness of life In Christ. He is the protector and filler of my Eternal Soul. His loving guidance, protection healing, directions to his word, Assurance through his holy spirit, these are all things we need daily.

  5. Jo says:

Sheep are stupid animals. They will wander away from the safety of the flock. They will eat all the grass around them and not move to other areas where they can get fresh grass. They will walk into running water, and be swept away. They have little to no protection from dangerous beasts. They need a shepherd to keep them safe and make sure they thrive.

We are sheep; we need our Shepherd to keep us safe (from the world) and to help us thrive.

As I read this psalm, the phrase, “I lack nothing” stood out…as well as the reality that it was not something that I, as the lamb did. It was all because of our Shepherd – He knows what I need & makes it happen – He makes me lie down, He leads, He refreshes, He guides …and even in the darkest valley, He is there! No fear!
Father, Your choices for me are life-giving & soul-restoring, but only by following Your leadership do I lack nothing. If I choose to follow my own path, I miss out on all the goodness You desire for me!

This morning I read Psalm 23 in The Message and I love the word picture that’s created when he says: “You send me in the right direction. Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I am not afraid” and “your love chases after me.” What stuck out to me is that no matter my situation, this is TRUTH. So even when Psalm 23 doesn’t feel like truth or doesn’t feel like my reality, this IS true about me and my situation…thankful I can put my full confidence in my Shepard!

I think we too often associate this scripture with death which is fine as it is used a lot at funerals to give hope to grieving families. But it is also very relevant for strength and encouragement in our everyday life if it is understood in that fashion. I was given a different way to see and understand this scripture by a very wonderful lady in my life and I thought it would be good to share it…

The Lord is my Shepherd–THAT IS RELATIONSHIP
    I lack nothing–THAT IS SUPPLY
He makes me lie down in green pastures–THAT IS REST
He leads me by quiet waters–THAT IS REFRESHMENT
He refreshes my soul–THAT IS HEALING
He guides me along the right paths–THAT IS GUIDANCE
For his name’s sake–THAT IS PURPOSE
Even though I walk through the darkest valley–THAT IS TESTING
I will fear no evil–THAT IS PROTECTION
For you are with me–THAT IS FAITHFULNESS
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me–THAT IS DISCIPLINE
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies–THAT IS HOPE
You anoint my head with oil–THAT IS CONSECRATION
    My cup overflows–THAT IS ABUNDANCE
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life–THAT IS BLESSING
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever–THAT IS ETERNITY

Hallelujah what an awesome God we serve!!
